Back to School! – September Meeting
Sep 1st
First and foremost, for those that have not heard, Dorkbot Austin is under new management. Our good friend Nick Pietraniec has accepted an exciting new job offer packing up his family and soldering irons to seek his fortune in the Pacific Northwest. We wish him the best of luck on his journey!
Secondly, our September meeting! This will take place Monday September 20th, at 7pm in the ACTLab (Studio 4B of the CMB building) at UT. The building is located at the SE corner of Guadalupe and Dean Keaton (26th Street).
Facebook Event: http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=147003611998758
We are going to try a bit of a different format for the meeting, and are currently seeking presenters. Please contact me at milsyobtaf [at] gmail [dot] com to put your hat in the ring. We would like to welcome the traditional 20-30 minute presentation / discussion format of (mostly) finished projects as well as bring in shorter 5-10 minute presentations of projects that are in progress or even in the planning stages. Need to brainstorm past a roadblock or seek help from the community? These shorter presentations are for you!
Questions or concerns? Don’t hesitate to let me know.
BigTrak was gone before, but now it’s back!
Aug 27th
I was so excited to find out about this! We used to have one of these when I was a wee child in 1979. We chased the cats around the house with it (which I’m sure is one of the reasons why they hated me). You can check out BigTrak and BigTrak Jr. at http://www.bigtrakisback.com/
Any Dorkbotters interested in participating in the Austin Futures Fair?
Aug 9th
I received this message from Michael Litt the other day, and thought I’d pass it along to you. If anyone is interested in contributing/participating, contact Mike Litt directly.
We are currently working with What is Austin? and Liveable City on the Austin Futures Fair. This is a 3 day event to increase public awareness of and participation in the the City of Austin’s Imagine Austin Comprehensive Plan, which will guide development and growth over the next 30 years.
Our goal is to ensure that the Plan has a meaningful community voice behind it that is invested in its successful implementation.
We want to do this by bringing various artists, community groups, activists, architects, designers, and other creative citizens together to showcase their visions of a future Austin with no limits, 30 to 100 years from now.
The main festivities will take place on Friday, September 17th, from 7pm – 11pm, and will feature art installations, slide show presentations, and graphics. We would love for you to participate in one of two ways described in the downloadable guidelines at AustinFuturesFair.com.
Also, a short introductory video we had fun making can be viewed there as well.
Interested people can fill out this form to submit their interest in participating!
The deadline to submit interest is Friday August 13th!
I know it’s last-minute, but here’s a party invite from ATX Hackerspace!
Aug 6th
Just got this note from Matthew McCabe of Austin Hackerspace. Hope you all can make it out tonight.
Our new space, 1601 Rutherford Ln, Suite 200A, is located in east central Austin and has a lot to offer. As of September 1st, 2010, we’ll have access to 1200 square feet (with 400sqft of additional loft space) — most of it open slab — with 300 amp service, 2 zone A/C, beefy vent fans, a tidy water closet, and a roll-up door. There’s a roomy conference area in front and the faint scent of candles from a previous tenant in back. Access is easy no matter where you’re coming from in Austin, and the parking couldn’t be better! For those of you in south Austin, we are still holding our first location at 209 E. Ben White Blvd, Unit #106 for the foreseeable future.
Help us celebrate our most recent success! Come meet the members of the ATX Hackerspace as we get our game on at Dave & Busters this Friday at 7PM.
Hope to see some of you [Friday] or at the new space sometime soon!
Diego Stocco Music Sound Designer
Jun 21st

Diego Stocco does things I dream of doing. Like recording himself playing a burning piano for a movie soundtrack and inventing weird hybrid musical instruments. Well, I do those kinds of things anyway but…

Strange thing having to do with electricity
May 26th

So I was about to do a massive post on concrete, which is actually more interesting (and tedious) than one would imagine (http://matse1.mse.uiuc.edu/concrete/prin.html) , when it dawned on me that it had nothing to do with electricity. Sometimes one needs inspiration; a new way of looking at old things.

Get a velocipede. Electrify it and make it collapsible. This is why I like engineering.

Educational Robot Runs on Java
Mar 25th
I received a postcard advertisement the other day for the IntelliBrain-Bot from Ridgesoft (www.ridgesoft.com). It’s a Java Programmable Educational Robot with 21 sensor ports for use in a variety of projects. It’s compatible with Bluetooth, it washes your dishes & irons your shirts… well, not right out of the box but maybe you could program it to do that. If you do, could you send it to my house when you’re finished? My shirts could use some ironing.

Neurons
I’m psyched! My dream of going to Fry’s to get parts for my brain may become a reality. OK, so I tend to take things too far but this is certainly interesting to my addled brain. I’m curious to see what happens with this technology aside from my own neurohacking. Now see here:
